Eligibility

You can be a repeat support worker on camp with BUNAC even if you applied through a different agency previously but you must have held a J-1 support staff visa to be eligible. With KAMP there are no agency fees deducted from your camp salary, nor do we make any charges to your camp so you get the full salary amount as stated on your contract. We offer two great value flight options for returners:

OPTION 1 - Own Arranger

You arrange and pay for your own round trip flight and onward travel to camp independently

OPTION 2 – BUNAC Flight

You buy a BUNAC round trip flight (London – New York – London only) and pay for it up front at the time of booking (2012 price to be confirmed).

Advantages of taking a BUNAC flight include:

Value for money – Together with a competitively priced round trip flight with Virgin Atlantic, the BUNAC flight package includes a transfer from the your arrival airport, overnight accommodation in New York, a BUNAC T-shirt and a phone card.

Flexible return – If your after-camp travel plans change you can transfer your homeward flight to another date within our programme for a low cost fee.

Make new friends – travelling with other BUNAC participants gives you the opportunity to make new friends before you even arrive in the US.

Costs & Eligibility

The returner fee with BUNAC is just £245 for applications submitted by 1 March 2012 (£295 for applications submitted after that date). Your returner fee includes:

  • BUNAC membership and administration costs
  • Choice of flight option with no deductions from your salary and no charges to your camp
  • 4 months comprehensive insurance (medical and baggage)
  • SEVIS administration fee

Other costs (note these costs are not unique to BUNAC)

Police Background Check. All UK applicants will be required to provide a current background check through ACPO. The fee for this check is £35. Irish applicants will need to apply for and submit a Police Certificate.

Visa processing fee. The US Embassy charge a processing and courier fee (TBC for 2012) and you will pay this at the time you apply for your visa. There may be extra charges for certain nationality passport holders (not UK or Ireland) – please contact BUNAC for advice.

How to apply

To apply as a returner with KAMP is easy using our online application system. Simply create a BUNAC account and you will be able to complete a returner application form and pay your registration fee.

To complete your returner application you will need to submit several supporting documents such as a copy of your contract, a reference and your police background check. You can track which documents we have received and which are still outstanding via your online account.

When we have received all of your necessary documentation you will choose your preferred flight and insurance options and start the visa application process. We encourage you to make the earliest application you can in order to avoid the busy period at the US Embassy and possible delays to your visa application. If you're making your own flight arrangements you may find that the best deals are available earlier in the year.

Other Returner Options

Returning to a different camp

If you have already arranged a contract, apply as described here but with the addition of a letter of reference from your previous camp. We cannot accept your application without this additional reference. If you would like BUNAC to find a new camp for you this year, apply as a first time KAMP applicant so that we can compile an up-to-date dossier to show to camp directors.

Returning to camp as a counsellor

If you have previously worked on BUNAC's KAMP programme (or a similar summer camp support staff programme) and have been offered a counsellor role this year, you should apply through the Summer Camp USA direct placement programme. NB You do not have to be a student to work at camp as a counsellor.

Not in the UK or Ireland?

If you are returning to camp but are not currently living in the UK or Ireland you should apply through our Direct Placement Overseas programme instead. Please contact BUNAC for advice.
