Insurance
Up to 4 months comprehensive insurance is included in the KAMP
registration fee. The insurance policy, which has been tailor-made for the programme,
offers full accident, medical and baggage coverage.
Why it is Mandatory
Insurance is a vital part of working and travelling in North America. In fact, the
US Government requires that all J-1 programme participants are adequately insured.
In order to be confident that all our participants comply with this requirement,
BUNAC’s insurance is a mandatory part of all our US programmes.
Insurance Company
The insurance is provided by a US-based company, Chartis. The cover has been developed
over many years and is tailor-made to meet and exceed US Government requirements
and your requirements as a BUNAC programme participant.
No Excess
One of the benefits of this policy is that, unlike the majority of travel policies,
there is no “excess” or “deductible” on claims. An excess is the amount of a claim
that will not be paid by insurers (normally the first £35-£75). This means that
if you make a claim, even for a small amount, the insurance company will refund
you the entire sum (assuming, of course, that it is a valid claim).
Period of Coverage
Cover is provided for up to four consecutive months and enables you to travel in
the USA, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. You are covered at no extra cost whilst
taking part in most sporting activities and in supervised hazardous activities.
Exclusions
As with all insurance policies there are some exclusions. This policy does not cover
claims arising from any pre-existing illness (such as asthma) which has arisen or
changed within the 12-month period before your coverage commenced. Details of these
exclusions can be found under Limitations and Exclusions in the insurance leaflet
(provided once you have a placement confirmed but available on request).
Medical cover upgrade
The standard policy includes $1million of medical cover. You may upgrade to $2million
of medical cover for an additional premium.
