Whether you’re a lecturer looking to implement a worthwhile and relevant practical element to a course that you teach, or a teacher that wants to open up a world of gap year opportunities to your students; BUNAC has the resources, knowledge and experience to help you achieve this.

Established in 1962, BUNAC (British Universities North America Club) is a not-for-profit organisation and has helped over 250,000 students and young people work and travel overseas. Opportunities range from working with children for 9 weeks in America on Summer Camp USA, to contributing towards worthwhile community development projects on BUNAC’s overseas teach and volunteer programmes. Flexible work visas for America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand are also available with full support from BUNAC throughout the whole experience from visa applications to job / accommodation hunting and travelling.

Add Value to the Student Experience

Encouraging your students to take part on a BUNAC programme will provide them with the tools that are in such high demand when searching for employment. The skills and experience that they inevitably gain enhances their employability, and as a result can help your university or college to meet graduate prospect targets. A BUNAC programme can also enrich the overall student experience and increase their satisfaction levels of life at university / college.

BUNAC are also able to provide complete assurance that your students will receive full support and advice throughout the whole work or volunteer abroad experience through:

  • Thorough visa-processing services
  • BUNAC flights and insurance options
  • Direct in-country support through partner organisations
  • Informative orientations to help prepare students for their experience

Enhancing Student Employability

Students that choose to take part in a BUNAC programme find themselves at a clear advantage over their peers when it comes to searching for employment. In most cases, their experience provides transferable skills and experiences which can be translated into a professional context. Core benefits include:

  • Gaining essential career skills such as teamwork, communication and leadership
  • Experiencing how businesses operate in an international environment
  • Gaining “life skills” such as independence, initiative and resourcefulness
  • Gaining a wider perspective of the world through making new friends from around the world and extensive post-work travel

BUNAC Placement Opportunities

BUNAC offers a wide range of work and volunteer programmes in many countries across the globe. Each programme offers its participants the chance to explore the world, make new friends and gain valuable international work experience. However, certain programmes are especially suited to university-level students that are enrolled on a specific course of study.

BUNAC currently operate a number of placement schemes with various academic institutions throughout the UK which provide relevant work experience for their students on certain courses. For example, Summer Camp USA is a particularly worthwhile programme for anyone studying towards a BSc in Sports Coaching as the coaching opportunities for a variety of different sporting activities on camp are extensive. Similarly, anyone working towards an American Studies degree should find Work America a particularly rewarding placement, as the programme allows for virtually any type of job to be taken anywhere in the USA for up to 4 months during the summer.

If you feel that BUNAC would be able to assist you in setting up a relevant placement scheme for your students, please don’t hesitate to contact BUNAC by emailing promo@bunac.org.uk.

Why BUNAC?

BUNAC has been pioneering international work experiences for students for over four decades. A unique not-for-profit, student-centred organisation, BUNAC aims to provide the very best opportunities for international employment and travel at reasonable and realistic cost to participants.

The club structure of BUNAC is unique. Students are represented and actively involved at all levels. On campus, Student Marketing Co-ordinators promote Club activity and provide effective peer marketing of programmes leading to Chartered Institute of Marketing Career Development Awards.

BUNAC's National Advisory Committee provides a representative cross-section of the membership and has a role in providing student feedback and market intelligence. This forum is the 'pulse' of the organisation and has a valuable role in the maintenance of BUNAC’s student-centred philosophy.

In addition, BUNAC members annually elect three student officers; an Honorary Chairperson, Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer to sit on the Club’s governing body, the General Council. These are board level positions and the incumbents contribute directly to the Club’s policy, strategy and development.
